Exploring La Jolla's Most Desirable Neighborhoods: A Guide to the Area's Best Real Estate

In Spanish, La Jolla means “the jewel,” which aptly describes the area. The city is one of the best oceanside resort communities in Southern California, making homes for sale in La Jolla highly desired. The arching coastline is full of natural coves and pristine beaches. With its ideal Mediterranean climate, fantastic dining and shopping, art galleries, and renowned institutions, including the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, it is no surprise that the neighborhoods in La Jolla are one of the most coveted areas to live in.

La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is located along the coastline and is the most picture-perfect area in La Jolla. This is where sea lions sunbathe on sun-baked rocks and the most sought-after beaches. The area is also home to the La Valencia Hotel, known for its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, large suites and villas, and blend of historic charm with modern amenities.

Adventure awaits in this bustling neighborhood

Many art galleries in the area feature work from local and national artists, including the Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery, which features artwork in various mediums, including paintings and sculptures. Paul Ecke, Jane Burton, and Sally Huss have all had works in the museum.

It should come as no surprise that the highlight of the area is a beach, specifically La Jolla Cove Beach. This beach is located right in front of the La Valencia Hotel. The waves typically do not get strong, making it an excellent beach for small children. The beach isn’t one of the largest in the area, but it has a hidden cove that is one of the famous sea caves in the area. The cave is frequented by sea lions sunbathing on the rocks, so you do not want to get too close. You can walk through the cave to the other side at low tide to take in the cave formation. The beach has permanent lifeguards, picnic tables, and green huts along the boardwalk.

La Jolla Cove is a part of the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park, which means that residents and visitors cannot participate in some of the water activities associated with the area, such as surfing, paddleboarding, or kayaking, at this beach. However, the beach is a gateway to the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park, which is a protected marine reserve. The reserve is divided into Ecological Reserve and Marine Life Refuge. Here, divers, swimmers, and snorkelers can explore sea life in this underwater park.

The Marine Life Refuge comprises the rest of La Jolla Underwater Park. The refuge is an academic research area. Throughout the park, you can see marine life, such as the Orange Garibaldi, which is California’s state fish, sea lines, sea stars, market squid, and sea turtles. The park also offers a guided tour and is free to the public. From here, you can explore the seven sea caves formed by 75-million-year-old sandstone. Six of the caves can be reached by kayak, swimming, or paddleboarding. You can enter the seventh cave on land through the Cave Store. Only one of the caves is visible from the land, and you can sign up for a tour through local businesses.

Where to eat in La Jolla Cove

There are numerous dining options in La Jolla Cove. One local favorite is George’s at the Cove, which serves new American cuisine prepared by the distinguished Trey Foshee. The restaurant overlooks the ocean and serves various dishes ranging from mussels to poblano spaghetti, served with charred peppers, corn, and cotija cheese. To fully experience the area, you must go to Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, known for its seafood and steak menu and has live jazz in the evenings. From here, you can watch the sunset over the ocean while enjoying your mouth-watering meal.

Bird Rock

This neighborhood is north of Pacific Beach and is known for its beautiful ocean views. From here, you can walk to Windansea Beach and Tourmaline Beach, which are two of San Diego’s most beautiful beaches. The main road is home to independently owned restaurants, boutiques, and cafes, which adds to the neighborhood’s eclectic and approachable feel while remaining classic and elegant.

What to do in Bird Rock

Visitors and residents enjoy a leisurely walk along La Jolla Boulevard to explore the mom-and-pop shops. You can stop by La Bella Figura by Bards, one of the area’s most popular interior design and home goods stores. You can also explore the neighborhood by bike, as a local trail weaves throughout the area. You can also bike to the beach to surf, relax on the sand, and enjoy the area’s natural beauty.

Hidden Valley

This neighborhood is precisely what the name suggests: hidden. This area is tucked away in a valley next to Mount Soledad. The homes in the area are a combination of stunning remodels and early 1990s architectural styles that highlight flat roofs, large windows, and balconies. Homes in Hidden Valley boast incredible views of the Pacific Ocean. Visitors and residents are just a quick walk away from La Jolla Shores Beach.

What to do in Hidden Valley

There is easy access to the freeways, which provides residents and visitors with the ability to go anywhere they want. There is much to explore in the neighborhood and lots to enjoy without having to get in a car, though downtown La Jolla is only a short drive away if you want to explore the area’s shopping, galleries, and restaurants.

Many people enjoy biking along the area and exploring Mount Soledad. The top of Mount Soledad boasts stunning 360-degree panoramic views. In addition to taking in the scenery, the landmark also provides information about its history. It is home to Mount Soledad National Veterans Memorial, which honors veterans from every military branch. You can also enjoy Mount Soledad Natural Park, which surrounds the memorial. The grassy area is a great place to rest, read a book, or enjoy a picnic.
